Am I ready to hire a bookkeeper? It’s a question I get all the time and one that each business owner needs to make for themselves. As someone who’s spent many hours deep in my favorite clients’ books here are some tips to help you decide if it’s time to get out of your own books and hand it off to a pro.
You’re ready to be the CEO
Business owners wear many hats; marketer, customer support, bookkeeper, oh, and the actual work of your business. But your business is getting to the point where you’re ready to hire out the tasks you don’t like and become the CEO and chief creator of your business. Perhaps you’ve started out slowly with a VA accomplishing a few tasks a week but now it’s time to step it up and get more of the boring tasks off your plate. You didn’t start your business to be a bookkeeper, it's time to hire out the task and step into your role as CEO.
You want your time back
Many of us started our own business so that we could own our own time. We can take time off as often as we want, not just when someone in HR decides we’re allowed. But the further along you get in your business you realize that you’re spending way more time on your business than you intended. The dream of owning your own time is slowly slipping away. If this is you, it’s time to get your time back. Hire out the tasks that are sucking up all your time. You started your business so you could coach, or write, or market for others, not so you could do stuff like bookkeeping. Crazy people like me started our businesses so we could do your bookkeeping (nerd alert!). Get your time back by hiring out your bookkeeping.
Stay in your zone of genius
Starting a business means learning how to do a bunch of things you’ve never done before. From Facebook ads to copywriting to bookkeeping. There’s so much to learn, and you can never truly master it all. Now that you’re moving from beginning entrepreneur to a kick-butt CEO it’s time to transition those items that are not in your zone of genius to the people who rock at them! If you’re ready to stop wasting your time on stuff outside of your zone, it’s time to hire a bookkeeper.
You've got the cash
I’m all for making smart financial decisions (obviously), so one of the important considerations when deciding whether to hire out your bookkeeping is whether or not you can afford it. Bookkeeping is definitely not one of the most expensive things you can hire out but it does take some dedication to a continuing monthly payment. Make sure to take the time to analyze your cash flow and determine if a bookkeeper is right for you at this time. Also, note that there are different levels of bookkeeping services. In the past I have offered my clients monthly bookkeeping as well as quarterly reviews for those who aren’t quite ready for full-blown bookkeeping help. Make a wise financial decision and hire the level of bookkeeping help you can afford.
You're just not doing it
I see this one a lot. You know bookkeeping is important and it’s on your to-do list but something else always jumps in front of it on the task list. Constantly seeing it on your to-do list but never getting checked off is weighing on you, looming over you. It’s time to hire it out. The weight off your shoulders will be worth the cost of hiring it out. Get someone else to do it for you.
So, is it time for you to hire out your bookkeeping? If so check out my monthly bookkeeping services. I’d love to take it off your hands!
