7 Money Books To Add To Your Reading List This Year
“You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” Charlie Jones
Money is a topic often written about, how to get it, where to spend it, how to manage it, how to make it grow. You can find books discussing every aspect of money, but where on earth should you start? I’ve compiled a list of some of my favorite money books to add to your reading list this year.
Total Money Makeover by Dave Ramsey
Finance is personal, and until you get your personal finances in order you’ll always feel a bit scattered around your business finances. Enter the Total Money Makeover. In Dave’s signature book he teaches you seven baby steps to systematically get your finances under control. Instead of tackling your whole financial situation at once he has you go step by step, getting one thing in order and then the next. The end goal? Financial freedom.
Profit First by Mike Michalowicz
So many business owners focus on what they have available to spend instead of how they can maximize their profits. Mike teaches you how to start with the profit you want to make and work backward from there. Instead of getting to the end of the month and seeing what’s left for profit, you determine your profit first and see what’s left for expenses. It’s a different way to think about business finances and a sure fire way to get you focused on what’s most important.
Retire Inspired by Chris Hogan
Retirement is often thought of as an age, but really it’s a financial number. And it’s a financial number that you need to be working on. The average American has way less in retirement than they should. And those of us who own our own business might have even less as most traditional employers make investing in retirement simple and automatic.
Chris teaches us why it’s so important to save for retirement and how to best get it done. He’s sprinkled in some heartbreaking stories, including an elderly lady having so little money that she had to resort to eating dog food. As well as some truly inspirational stories showing how an excellent nest egg is possible on a less than average income. Take your future into your own hands, read this book and get started saving for retirement today!
The Legacy Journey by Dave Ramsey
Money shouldn’t be made, saved and grown just for its own sake. The greatest joy you’ll have with money is giving to others. In The Legacy Journey, Dave teaches you how getting control of your money doesn’t just change your life, it changes the lives of those around you and changes your family tree. He challenges many of the traditional thoughts and beliefs surrounding money and wealth, such as “the love of money is the root of all evil”. If you’re looking to change the way you and your family approach wealth for generations to come don’t miss this book.
The Millionaire Next Door by Stanley & Danko
Flashy cars, expensive jewelry, fancy clothes; these are usually the first things you think of when you think about millionaires. But Stanley and Danko have researched the average millionaire, and it turns out they look just like you and me. You wouldn’t know it by looking at them but the average millionaire is likely hiding in your very neighborhood. And those who look like they should be millionaires are usually not even close. They discuss the spending habits and choices that these millionaires next door have in common, choices that are drastically different than you would expect.
Thou Shall Prosper by Rabbi Danial Lapin
The Jewish people, on the whole, have prospered greatly throughout history. Rabbi Lapin dives into the 10 commandments of making money that have helped the Jewish people prosper. From the idea that business is a dignified and moral endeavor to the need to learn about your money. These universal principles can be applied to anyone and everyone, regardless of faith. It’s time to stop thinking of making money as evil and start prospering.
Not sure if your business is prospering?

Get Rich Lucky B*tch by Denise Duffield-Thomas
From talking about the 10 commandments of making money to a book about manifesting, you would think these don’t belong on the same list, but they do. While I’m not a very “woo woo” person, (I like my solid numbers and facts, thank you very much), this book does a great job of working on your mindset around money and the actions you have to take after that.
Some of the explanations behind the tools are a bit weird to me (I’ll pass on asking the “Universe” for stuff). I think the concept of having a mindset of abundance rather than scarcity is powerful, it makes you much more aware of the opportunities available to you. She asks you to challenge your negative beliefs about money, which is definitely a positive thing. If you’re looking to focus on your money mindset, this book is a great option.
Get that reading list packed with this collection of money books covering everything from controlling your money to preparing for retirement to working on your money mindset. Your wallet will thank you!
