Smart people have said a lot of smart things about money. And let’s be honest, a lot of dumb people have had their say as well. I’ve gathered a few of my favorite smart quotes about money to inspire you to take control of your business finances.
1. Money is only a tool. It will take you wherever you wish, but it will not replace you as the driver. -Ayn Rand
You are completely in control of your money, or at least you should be. As you grow your business you have to pay attention to where your money is coming from and where it is going.
A good driver can only make the right decisions when they can clearly see the road ahead of them and a glimpse of where they’ve come from. Your books are your headlights on a dark road, they illuminate the way, but it’s still up to you to drive.
2. Happiness is not in the mere possession of money; it lies in the joy of achievement, in the thrill of creative effort. -Franklin D. Roosevelt
As entrepreneurs we strive to make money, not for the sake of money but because we feel called to do something more in the world than sit at someone else’s desk.
We have a fire inside of us to achieve our dreams, support our families, and bring something to this world. Money is one of the measures of how successful we’ve done it, and our books are the record of that achievement.
3. Money is a terrible master but an excellent servant. -P.T. Barnum
Never live for the money, live for the things that can be accomplished with money. If money is truly your servant than you will know exactly how you’ve brought it in and where you’ve sent it out. Your financial books are the evidence of a well-managed servant.
4. You must gain control over your money or the lack of it will forever control you. -Dave Ramsey
Dave Ramsey is one of my favorite financial people, and the concept that you have to control your money is so important. You need a budget for your personal life, and you have to keep records of your business spending. Control your money by telling it where to go and keeping track of where it’s gone.
5. You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you. -Maya Angelou
You’re in this for the pure joy of doing something you love and serving people that you love. The only way you can continue to serve them well is to stay in business. So while you don’t do it for the money, the money is important if you want to keep going. Keep track!
6. If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability. -Henry Ford
The ability to earn money is what makes us independent. It can all be taken away at a drop of the hat, but they can never take your ability to create more. Prove it to yourself by keeping track of what you’re able to make.
7. It's not how much money you make, but how much money you keep, how hard it works for you, and how many generations you keep it for. -Robert Kiyosaki
The most important financial number in your business is profit, or how much you keep. It does you no good to bring in $100k if it costs you $99k to get there. Write it down, have a plan, control your spending and above all keep track.
8. Many people take no care of their money till they come nearly to the end of it, and others do just the same with their time. -Johann Wolfgang von Goethe
Take control of your money and time now, not before you run out. Don’t wait until your business is barely making it to decide that it’s time to dig into your books, do it now!
9. Success is walking from failure to failure with no loss of enthusiasm. -Winston Churchill
Maybe you’ve had a failed business venture, or maybe you’re just failing to keep track of what’s happening right now. You might have built a pile of failure, but choose to stand on top of it and claim victory, don’t let yourself get buried underneath.
10. If we command our wealth, we shall be rich and free. If our wealth commands us, we are poor indeed. -Edmund Burke
A common theme of these fantastic quotes about money is to take control. Taking control is important in every area of our lives but especially when it comes to money. Own your money, own your worth, own your books. Take control of your life.
Pick your favorite, print it out and put it somewhere to constantly remind you of how important it is to pay attention to your business books.
Take control of your money, take control of your business, and most importantly, take control of your life.
